Phase 1: Before China

1. Apply to a Chinese University

Degree programs have strict deadlines, usually January–March for September intake. Language programs are more flexible but still require 2–3 months lead time.

2. Receive Admission Letter and JW Form

The JW201 (for scholarship students) or JW202 (for self-funded students) is applied for by your university. This is the slowest step — 4–8 weeks is normal.

Red flag

If your university delays the JW form beyond 8 weeks, escalate politely but firmly. Some schools process these in batches and yours may have been missed.

3. Book Visa Appointment

Use the CVASC website. The process is identical to X2 but select "X1" as your visa type. Bring all documents plus any physical exam records if required by your center.

4. Attend Appointment

The officer may ask more questions for X1 than X2: "Why this university?" "Who is funding you?" "What will you do after graduation?" Be honest and concise.

5. Collect Visa and Fly

Your X1 visa is valid for 30 days from entry. Do not enter China more than 30 days before your program starts, or your visa may expire before classes begin.

Phase 2: First 30 Days in China

Day 1–3: Register and Settle

If staying in a dorm, the university handles police registration. If renting privately, go to the local police station within 24 hours with your passport, lease, and landlord's ID. This is not optional — fines apply.

Day 3–7: Physical Examination

Go to the International Travel Health Care Center in your city. Bring passport, photos, and cash. The exam takes 2–3 hours. Results come in 3–5 working days.

Day 7–14: Submit Residence Permit Application

Your university's international office usually handles this. They need: passport, visa, admission letter, physical exam results, police registration, photos, and forms. Double-check everything before submission.

Day 14–25: Wait

Standard processing is 5–10 working days. Your passport is held by the PSB during this time, so you cannot travel internationally.

Day 25–30: Collect Residence Permit

You get a sticker in your passport with your photo, address, and permit validity (usually matching your program length). Now you can travel freely in and out of China.

Common Pitfalls

  • Entering too early: If you arrive 35 days before classes start, your 30-day visa expires before you can convert it. Time your flight carefully.
  • Missing police registration: Some students skip this and face fines or delays at the PSB.
  • Wrong physical exam center: Only certain hospitals are authorized. Your university will tell you which one.
  • Losing the pickup slip: The PSB gives you a slip when you submit. You need it to collect your permit. Photograph it immediately.
