X1 Visa Guide

For long-term study (6+ months)

What is the X1 Visa?

The X1 visa is for long-term academic study in China — programs lasting 6 months or more. This includes university degree programs, long-term language courses, and research fellowships.

Unlike the X2, the X1 is a single-entry visa valid for 30 days. Your goal is to enter China, then convert it to a residence permit within those 30 days. The residence permit is what actually lets you stay long-term.

Key facts

  • Valid for 30 days from entry (single entry)
  • Must convert to residence permit within 30 days
  • Requires a physical examination in China
  • Multiple entry possible after residence permit is issued
  • Cannot work legally without additional authorization

Requirements

The X1 has stricter requirements than the X2 because you are staying longer and will receive a residence permit.

  • Valid passport — 6+ months validity, blank pages
  • Admission letter — From a Chinese university or licensed school
  • JW201 or JW202 form — Official government form; your school applies for this on your behalf
  • Physical examination record — Some countries require this before applying; others accept a China-based exam
  • Proof of funds — Higher threshold than X2; typically $5,000–10,000 or scholarship proof
  • No criminal record certificate — Required by some schools and some visa centers
  • Cover letter — Explaining your study plans and post-graduation intentions

Application Steps

  1. Apply to a Chinese university — Degree programs have deadlines (usually January–March for September intake). Language programs are more flexible.
  2. Receive admission letter and JW form — Universities handle JW form applications. This can take 4–8 weeks.
  3. Book visa appointment — Same process as X2, but tell them you are applying for X1.
  4. Attend appointment with all documents — The physical exam requirement varies by country. Ask your center.
  5. Collect visa — 4 working days standard.

After Arrival: The 30-Day Countdown

This is where many students panic. You have 30 days from entry to convert your X1 visa to a residence permit. Here is what happens:

  1. Physical examination — Done at an International Travel Health Care Center in your city. Takes 3–5 working days for results. Cost: $50–150.
  2. Register with local police — If you are renting privately, register at the local police station within 24 hours. Dorm residents: the school handles this.
  3. Submit residence permit application — Your school's international office usually helps with this. You will need: passport, visa, admission letter, physical exam results, housing registration, photos, and application form.
  4. Collect residence permit — Takes 5–10 working days. Your passport will have a new sticker with your photo and permit details.

Critical

Do not let your 30-day visa expire while waiting for the residence permit. Start the physical exam within the first week. If delays happen, visit the PSB before day 25 to explain and request an extension.
