How to Prepare for the HSK

A practical guide from placement to test day

Prep Timeline

Most HSK candidates need 3-6 months of consistent study per level. Here is the typical arc from start to test day.

1

Placement Test

Take a free online test to find your current HSK level.

2

Daily Study

30-60 minutes of vocabulary, grammar, and listening practice.

3

Mock Exams

Take 3-5 full practice tests under timed conditions.

4

Register

Book your test date at an official HSK center.

5

Take the Test

Arrive early, bring ID, stay calm -- you are ready.

Study Materials

These are the resources most HSK students use to prepare. You do not need everything -- pick what fits your study style and budget.

Recommended Textbooks

The HSK Standard Course (by Jiang Liping, Beijing Language and Culture University Press) is the official textbook series used by most students and schools. Each level has a textbook and a workbook with audio.

Textbook levels and estimated study time. Actual time varies by learner.

Apps and Digital Tools

A few apps that HSK students use daily:

  • Pleco -- The most popular Chinese dictionary app. Built-in flashcard system works with HSK word lists. Free with paid add-ons.
  • Skritter -- Handwriting practice for Chinese characters. Teaches stroke order and recognition. Subscription-based.
  • SuperTest (HSK Online) -- Mock exams and practice questions for all HSK levels. Follows the official test format. Includes listening, reading, and writing sections.

Time and Cost Estimates

Here is what a typical non-intensive HSK prep plan looks like:

Final Tips

  • Start with the vocabulary. HSK tests words you know more than grammar rules. Use spaced repetition (Pleco flashcards or Anki) to review daily.
  • Practice listening early. Get used to the speed and accent of the audio recordings. Listen to Chinese podcasts or videos in the background.
  • Simulate exam conditions. Take at least 3 full mock exams with a timer before the real test. It makes a big difference.
  • Register early. Test centers can fill up, especially in big cities. Book at least 4-6 weeks before the exam date.
