How Many Hours Per Week?

The realistic study schedules that lead to fluency — and the ones that don't.

The number of hours you study each week is the single biggest predictor of how fast you'll learn Chinese. But more is not always better — consistency matters more than intensity.

The Minimum Effective Dose

Research and my own experience suggest 10 hours per week is the floor for meaningful progress. Below that, you spend too much time reviewing what you forgot since last session.

The Sweet Spot

20–25 hours per week produces excellent results for most learners. This typically means 3–4 hours of class plus 1–2 hours of self-study daily. At this pace, you can reach HSK 4 in 12–18 months.

Full Immersion

Studying 30+ hours per week in China — classes plus immersion — is the fastest path. Students at this intensity often reach conversational fluency in 6–12 months. But burnout is real. Build in rest days.
