Vibe
Chengdu is famous for three things: pandas, spicy food, and a pace of life that rejects China's hustle culture. Here, people take afternoon tea, play mahjong in parks, and genuinely believe that relaxing is a virtue.
The city is massive — 21 million people — but feels intimate in its neighborhoods. Narrow alleyways ("longtangs") hide teahouses and hotpot restaurants. The Jinjiang River cuts through the center, lined with willow trees and jogging paths.
For Mandarin learners, Chengdu is excellent. The local dialect (Sichuanhua) is distinct, but everyone speaks standard Mandarin. Unlike coastal cities where English is common, you will need Chinese for daily life — which accelerates learning dramatically.
Cost of Living
Chengdu is cheap for a city of its size. Rent is roughly 40% lower than Guangzhou. Eating out is a national pastime, and even good restaurants are affordable.

Language Schools
Chengdu has a surprisingly robust language education scene, fueled by its growing expat community and universities.
- Sichuan University — Top-tier Chinese language program for foreigners. Large campus, diverse student body. Semester cost ~$1,400–2,200. Highly recommended.
- University of Electronic Science and Technology (UESTC) — Smaller program but well-organized. Good for students who want a tech-focused environment.
- Private schools — Growing rapidly. Group classes $250–500/month. 1-on-1 $15–28/hour. Quality is generally decent due to competition.
Visa Processing
Western China hub
Chengdu's visa application center serves much of western China. It is busy but efficient. Standard processing takes 4 working days. The office is near Tianfu Square; book online. Staff rarely speak English, so bring a translator or prepare key phrases.
The PSB office for extensions is in the south of the city. Be prepared for long queues. Many students use agents for extensions — it costs more but saves hours of waiting.
Ease of Life
Ratings are subjective, based on my experience visiting 2024–2025.
Bottom Line
Chengdu offers the best lifestyle-to-cost ratio of any major Chinese city. The food is legendary, the people are warm, and the pace is humane. The downsides: poor winter air quality, grey skies for months, and Sichuan dialect can confuse beginners. But if you want to live well while learning Mandarin, Chengdu is a strong contender.
